3 shot, 7 arrested as youths protest arrest of Bamidele’s loyalists in Ekiti
FROM CHARLES ADEGBITE, Ado-Ekiti
Pandemonium broke out again yesterday in Iyin-Ekiti, the country-home of General Adeyinka Adebayo (retd), during which three people were allegedly shot by the police and five other protesters arrested.
The crisis started in the morning when police arrested two loyalists of Mr. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele over allegations of attacking members of the Governor Kayode Fayemi’s faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a fracas that broke out between them.
The youth of the town got annoyed, saying that it was Fayemi’s group that attacked Bamidele’s loyalists last weekend, wondering why the government sent policemen to arrest them.
They barricaded the roads with bonfires, singing songs and advising the governor and his security aides to leave their sons alone.......

As the protest continued, policemen were again drafted to the scene, and in the cause of stopping the crisis, they allegedly shot three of the people and arrested five others along with the two earlier arrested.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Victor Babayemi, confirmed the arrests, saying the people who were allegedly wounded in last weekend’s crisis mentioned the names of the suspects they arrested.
He added that the people, who were injured had been taken to the hospital, adding that the situation had been brought under control.
In a statement signed by Opeyemi Bamidele’s Media Assistant, Ahmed Salami, and made available to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti, he said: “We hereby call on the Inspector General of Police and the Director of the State Security Service to rise up and act swiftly to ensure security of lives, property and peace.”
