The economic model of the UAE is something I find fascinating.
The UAE discovered oil and realised the lifespan of the oil will be short. So they positioned the economy for for social tourism, ultra high end modern real estate and medical tourism.
In turn, they did something drastic with their airlines. They consider their airline cost-centers revenue support ventures. In other words they don't consider their airlines to be a solely profit generating outfit. The main purpose of the airlines is to convey passengers from all over the world so they can have easy access to the Emirates with very cheap flight ticket. In addition they provide free visa entry for about 30 days. They also have favourable open sky policy for third party airline carriers.
All these for one purpose; support the economic positioning of the Emirates. How would you have something beautiful and not allow people have access to it?.
This is what I call inclusive, holistic economic structure, where the economy of a geographical anthropological system is viewed as a whole rather than individual economic ventures (check economic anthropology).
This system of economy allows focus and uses individual aspect of the economy to drive the main thrust of the main economy. In other words an aspect of the economy may be subsidized (a euphemism for running business at a loss deliberately to serve a higher purpose) to help support revenue generation for the main economy.
Nigeria needs to start restructuring her economy this way. We need to first position our economy in the area of our competitive advantage. That area we have great returns with least effort. One of such areas is Agriculture. Throw any seed on the ground in Nigeria, without covering it; you will see it burgeoning after some days. Only one explanation for this; the land is naturally fertile.
The economic potential of this sector is on a global scale. Vast arable land waiting to be utilized. The government can come in contractual agreement with different nations to produce certain food crops for them while they lease the land. We can produce, process, package and distribute agricultural produce on a global scale feeding nations of the world.
This sector is responsible for about 40% of the GDP and and employs about 70% of the workforce. It has great potential to generate forex. So much potential!
Another area of focus that I will subsidize is the education sector. The human resource of Nigeria is, perhaps, her most valuable of resources. In 2018 alone, the total remittance by the diaspora community stood at $25.08 billion. It rose from about $3 billion in 2013 to $25.08 billion in 2018, with cumulative remittances standing at about $96.5 billion in six years (according to NBS). Wow! Pure wow!
To put it in perspective; the 2020 revised budget is 10.8 trillion naira. That is about the same amount the diaspora community sent into the country in 2018. In other words, this economic block can conveniently sponsor the Nigerian budget. These are students, workers, 'hustlers', etc.
If I were the president, I will look critically into turning the education system into a cost-center revenue support venture. I will subsidize the education of Nigerians all over the world and watch as they naturally remit money back home to support their families and improve the economy. I will put structures in place to make it easy for them to pursue their education anywhere in the world. And we will join hands together to build the nation.
It's time we restructured the economy from just 'producing' to processing, packaging and distribution.
God bless Nigeria!
God bless Africa!
